Physiology

Leukotrienes cause bronchoconstriction, inflammation, and mucus production in the airways. Blocking them helps keep airways open.

Indications

  • Asthma maintenance
  • Allergic rhinitis

  • Neuropsychiatric effects (mood changes, anxiety, depression)
  • GI upset

Contraindications

  • Acute asthma attack

Nursing Considerations

  • Not for acute attacks (no immediate bronchodilation)
  • Give once daily in the evening (better control of nighttime symptoms)
  • Monitor for mood or behavior changes (important safety warning)
  • Used as add-on therapy, not first-line (for patients not controlled on ICS)
