Physiology

Inflammation or irritation in the urinary tract can cause burning, urgency, and discomfort. Urinary analgesics relieve symptoms but do not treat infection.

Mechanism of Action

Phenazopyridine exerts a local analgesic effect on urinary tract mucosa after being excreted in urine.

Indications

  • Short-term relief of dysuria
  • Urinary discomfort with UTI while antibiotics take effect
  • Post-procedure urinary burning

Side Effects / Adverse Effects

  • Orange-red urine discoloration
  • GI upset
  • Headache
  • Staining of clothing/contact lenses
  • Rare methemoglobinemia or hemolytic anemia

Contraindications

  • Severe renal impairment
  • Liver disease
  • Use longer than recommended without evaluation
  • G6PD deficiency caution

Nursing Considerations

  • Teach that orange urine is expected and can stain fabric
  • Explain it does not replace antibiotics for UTI
  • Use only short term, commonly no more than 2 days with antibiotic unless prescribed
  • Assess ongoing fever, flank pain, or worsening symptoms
  • Monitor renal function in at-risk patients
